Calmar Loops | Organizational Biology & Other Thoughts

Calmar is a small town in central Alberta. Located in the heart of both the agricultural and energy industries of the province. Generally, the loops described below are on secondary paved highways with low to moderate traffic (except where noted).

Ride Description: Calmar and Thorsby owe their names and existence to a large influx of Scandinavian immigrants.  On this day, EBTC will be running 3+1 rides in one.  For those who like a shorter distance, register for the 50km Calmar-Churches & Cemeteries Loop.   This is a leisurely ride with ample opportunity to stop and photograph and admire the churches, cemeteries and vistas in and around Calmar.  We will ride as a group meaning we will stop periodically for everyone to catch up and to hear about the history and stories of the areas we are travelling through.

At the other extreme is the Calmar Box Loop.  A faster pace and 90km distance takes you out towards St. Francis and a surprise detour worth seeing.  Please note that this involves highway riding with a variety of shoulders and traffic volumes/patterns.  See read above route-link for specific cautions.  If 90km does not seem like enough, a bonus route can take you up through Thorsby increasing the 90km route to 106km.

In between these two extremes is the Calmar-Sunnybrooke Loop (67km).  This takes you through a few more central Alberta towns (Thorsby and Sunnybrook).  Please note that this ride and the Calmar Box Loop are NOT group rides.  A sweep may be provided but each rider is expected to navigate and travel the route on their own.  The 67, 90 and 106km routes all have highway riding cautions you are encouraged to read before signing up.

Please carefully consider which route best matches your comfort in distance, riding type (group or not) and highway-riding-comfort.

Showers are available at the end of the ride at the Town of Vegreville Campsite, located adjacent to the Pysanka.

If you are interested in checking out Vegreville’s Ukrainian heritage at the end of the ride this is the last day of the local 3 day Ukrainian Pysanka Festival (depending on Covid restrictions).
