Pigeon Lake Inner Loop (PLIL)

Pigeon Lake Inner Loop Sep 18 Register

Pigeons, Putzs and Pleasures

Time: Arrive at 9:45AM for a 10AM sharp start

Starting Point: Mulhurst Bay, Cedar Crest Inn (closed).

Ride Leader: Frank Potter

Skill level/distance/appropriate bike: Intermediate; 60km; a hybrid bike is ideal, a road bike is okay and a mountain bike for the more fit can be used; a well-maintained bike and the ability to ride maintain a good pace is critical; not beginner ride.

Route Maps: A RideWithGPS map is not provided.

Ride Description: This ride is a classic! It is a 60km+ ride that takes you along cottage roads, provincial parks, a nasty highway, and a few surprises.  We will be riding at a cruising pace which gives everyone a chance to chat (six feet apart) and enjoy the last days of summer.  The route is about 40-60% on hard packed gravel or trails and there are not a lot of services en route.  We will stop in Ma-Me-O Beach but the shop there was closed last time.  As a result, please plan to pack sufficient fluids, a snack, etc. for the route.  There are few tricky corners so generally we ride as a group.  Those who want to add about 10 km are encouraged to play ‘beat-Frank’ on two designated sections. Please note, this is a non-supported ride in remote rural areas.

Meet Up Details
Mulhurst is on the east side of the lake and is accessible from Highway 2 and highway 616.  If you need an address for your GPS, use 5402 Lake Drive, Mulhurst Bay AB T0C 2C0. *** CAUTION *** This address is NOT Correct in Google Maps.  The inner loop’s return time is highly UNPREDICTABLE; please plan accordingly.

Calmar Loops | Organizational Biology & Other Thoughts

Calmar is a small town in central Alberta. Located in the heart of both the agricultural and energy industries of the province. Generally, the loops described below are on secondary paved highways with low to moderate traffic (except where noted).

Ride Description: Calmar and Thorsby owe their names and existence to a large influx of Scandinavian immigrants.  On this day, EBTC will be running 3+1 rides in one.  For those who like a shorter distance, register for the 50km Calmar-Churches & Cemeteries Loop.   This is a leisurely ride with ample opportunity to stop and photograph and admire the churches, cemeteries and vistas in and around Calmar.  We will ride as a group meaning we will stop periodically for everyone to catch up and to hear about the history and stories of the areas we are travelling through.

At the other extreme is the Calmar Box Loop.  A faster pace and 90km distance takes you out towards St. Francis and a surprise detour worth seeing.  Please note that this involves highway riding with a variety of shoulders and traffic volumes/patterns.  See read above route-link for specific cautions.  If 90km does not seem like enough, a bonus route can take you up through Thorsby increasing the 90km route to 106km.

In between these two extremes is the Calmar-Sunnybrooke Loop (67km).  This takes you through a few more central Alberta towns (Thorsby and Sunnybrook).  Please note that this ride and the Calmar Box Loop are NOT group rides.  A sweep may be provided but each rider is expected to navigate and travel the route on their own.  The 67, 90 and 106km routes all have highway riding cautions you are encouraged to read before signing up.

Please carefully consider which route best matches your comfort in distance, riding type (group or not) and highway-riding-comfort.
