Keen to Ride This Winter? Sign up for EBTC’s ‘Ad Hoc’ Winter Rides!
They’re everywhere and they’re multiplying. No, not viruses but just as resilient: Winter Riders!
EBTC members, who proved our resilience in the summer’s heat, can now enjoy this fun winter activity with the Club. Since weather and riding conditions can change quickly in winter, rides will be ‘ad hoc’. This means they’ll be offered close to the ride date and, unlike summer rides, won’t be posted in the calendar on the EBTC website.
So, how will this work? Two simple steps:
First, you need to be on the ‘EBTC Winter Riders 2021-22’ list. If you’re interested in winter riding, register for this List using the Karelo Link below.
Second, once you are on the list, you will then receive an e-mail notification whenever a ride is offered. When a ride leader plans an ‘ad hoc’ winter ride, they will send an e-mail to members on the EBTC Winter Riders list. That e-mail will have the link in Karelo to register and the ride description, including the meeting location and time. There are no RWGPS routes as winter rides are mainly off-road, and riders stay together to follow the leader.
We’ll use this first season of EBTC winter rides to gain experience. There will be a limited number of ride leaders and many fewer rides than in summer. Also, the nature of winter riding requires that ride leaders set low caps on the number of registrants for their rides. Karelo registration, however, is the same process as in summer: you can sign up for the waitlist if a ride is full; you can cancel your registration for the EBTC Winter Riders list and/or for a specific ride if you so choose.
We all look forward to future Newsletters with super pictures and reports of EBTC members’ winter ride adventures. Let it snow!
New for 2021: Ride and Other Event Registration
As of mid-winter 2021, it appears that Alberta’s Public Health Mandatory Measures and Guidelines will remain into the 2021 riding season, including a maximum number of participants (cap) for an outdoor activity. To offer events which comply and are safe for members, EBTC is introducing on-line registration. This service is from Karelo, already used for membership registration but with a simpler form for day rides or other events.
Questions and Answers for Members
The Q & As below about on-line registration were drafted in mid-winter 2021. They will be updated with changes to Public Health directions, and questions from members.
Also, please become familiar with the EBTC Covid 19 Ride Protocols for Members here. EBTC members are expected to self-manage for the safety of all participants – before the ride, at ride start in a parking lot, at rest stops, and upon return at ride end.
How do I register?
Do I have to register for every ride of interest at season start, before they are filled to the cap?
Can I register for another person when I register for myself?
Can I cancel my registration? What if I can't make the ride?
If you don’t have the Karelo e-mail registration confirmation,
login to your Karelo account (https://www.karelo.com/login.php) and click on My Account → My Registrations.
The Review Registrations page will appear with the note ‘To change a registration, please click on the confirmation number’. Once you do this, the ride information will appear. Go to the bottom of the page and click on ‘Cancel this Registration’.
If this registration has more than one person but only one is cancelling, click on ‘Remove Person’ instead.
How will I know my event registration status?
Karelo will e-mail that you cancelled.
If you registered for someone else and cancel, you will receive the Karelo e-mail and are responsible for informing them.
Will there be a waitlist for a ride that has reached the cap?
With a long waitlist, the ride leader may offer waitlisted members a 2nd ride, departing earlier/later to keep the groups apart.
If you waitlisted yourself and someone else but only one spot is available, one member can ride, or you can cancel in Karelo.
How will I know my event registration status?
Karelo will e-mail about your waitlist and ride status.
The rider leader will email with details if a 2nd group ride is organized.
If you waitlisted someone else, you are responsible for informing them of the waitlist and ride status.
Will I still have to sign-in on paper at a ride?
Will all rides be limited to the Public Health cap?
What if I show up but haven’t registered for the ride?
However, if the ride is not full, the ride leader may ask you to register on your mobile phone so that you can participate.
